Perforated Aluminium Balustrade Panels: Private Apartment, Bankside, London
There are a number of BS & BSEN Standards that apply to balustrades and at times this causes confusion and uncertainty for designers and specifiers alike!
BS 6399 (withdrawn March 2010) and superseded by BSEN 1991-1-1. BS 6399 Parapets, Balustrades and Partitions were covered and some design loads were given and this was extended to infil panels but for a designer to consider (by calculation usually).
BSEN 1991-1-1 reference is made to a National Annex for the actual design loads to be considered. This gives values for parapets and balustrades but not infil. There are requirements for partitions which have to provide a restraining function. Partitions are also required to resist vertical load but infill to balustrades are not included.
Product: Perforated Aluminium pattern ref: GA P1607
Finish: Satin Brush ref GA B1420
Project Background:
Suspended perforated aluminium panels have been recently installed in Groupama’s, One America Square offices in the City of London.
GA’ perforated panels successfully met Groupama’s criteria for a contemporary screening material and system that permits light and air to freely flow around the open plan offices.
These specially produced satin brush finish screening panels were manufactured with plain border margins to allow for the attachment of a fixed floor to ceiling stainless steel suspension system.

Key Facts:
• Aluminium is great for incorporating into environmentally sensitive applications, such as this one.
• Environmentally friendly aluminium is the only recyclable material that more than pays for it’s own re-cycling costs!
• Re-cycling aluminium into new forms only requires 5% of the energy that originally produced it.
• All manufactured aluminium is effectively a stored energy bank for future generations.
• Aluminium is only 1/3rd the weight of steel.
• Aluminium’s surface has a self generating and repairing oxide coating which makes it corrosion resistant and therefore less expensive to maintain than steel and other corrodible metals.

Pimlico Academy is a Visual and Performing Arts College based in Westminster, London. Pimlico benefitted from the £152million BSF (Building Schools for the Future) Programme (under Westminster Council) where they secured funds for a new sports hall that includes a new gym open to the wider public, an all weather floodlight pitch and a new community library and education centre.
The project aim was to significantly improve the sporting and education facilities at the school. Gooding Aluminium clad the sports auditorium walls with their lightweight, perforated aluminium wall panels, the ‘GA Ano-Sil Anodised finished panels‘ provided fantastic acoustics for the hall which is being enjoyed by over 1500 pupils.
