Project Background

Solihull School opened the doors of the David Turnbull Music School in Spring 2010. The £3 million self-contained building on the Warwick Road campus offers pupils one of the most comprehensively equipped and technologically advanced music facilities in the region.

As a result, the independent school’s capacity has increased to involve many more of its 1,000 pupils in learning, practising and performing music.

Lead specifiers, Malcolm Payne Group (Birmingham) provided architectural excellence in the creation of the integrated music centre for teaching, study and performance. The David Turnbull Music School – named after a former head of music at Solihull School – includes a spacious 100-seat recital room and a recording studio with direct audio and video links to the main performance spaces.

The practice, teaching and ensemble rooms are grouped around a central atrium, together with a computer suite designed to encourage a new generation of young composers.

Project Background

BP Valhall Accommodation/Hotel Platform Project

The Valhall platform is located in the North Sea off the coast of Norway and is one of the largest offshore brownfield projects ever attempted across the globe. The $2.4billion project was to build a new accommodation/production platform, preserving a proportion of the existing infrastructure which was pending eventual decommissioning and to stop reservoir subsidence in order to extend field life to 2049.

The new production and hotel platform – has a design life of 40 years. It is sized for production of about 120,000 barrels of oil and 143million cu ft of gas per day; water handling capability of 200,000bpd; a topsides weight of some 16,000 tonnes, and jacket weighing in at 7,500 tonnes.

Project Details
Working with renowned SLP Engineering, Gooding Aluminium were contracted to supply aluminium wall cladding Type WC2, combining perforated and plain aluminium sheets, for the atrium accommodation facilities module (Perforated Aluminium Sheet GA P1632 & Plain Aluminium Sheet GA 1539).

The living quarters house 180 people, they are powered from offshore for additional energy efficiency, but more importantly, the Gooding Aluminium lightweight, powder coated finish perforated sheets weigh 1.38 kg/m2, and the plain aluminium sheets are 5.5 kg/m2. The lightweight nature of the panels helped to bring the platform within the specified weight limit, contributing to the ongoing subsidence control programme.

In total, over 950 aluminium panels were supplied, manufactured and delivered in 4 stages. Each stage delivered ahead of schedule and once again celebrated Gooding Aluminium’s enviable 100% quality control, whereupon no panels were rejected.

London Festival of Architecture use Super lightweight aluminium treadplates, making Duke of York Steps accessible for all.

The project brief was to make the historic site of the Duke of York Steps (running between The Mall and Waterloo Place near Lower Regent Street) accessible for all. Previously, the steps were completely inaccessible to wheel chair users. Gooding Aluminium’s super lightweight aluminium treadplates (GA HGP1601) were the perfect partner for this weight sensitive and innovative project.

The core objective was to facilitate the passage of a person in a wheelchair or mobility scooter up and down the steps using dignified and independent means without connecting to mains electricity. This installation has become one of the key highlights of the West End focus for the London Festival of Architecture 2010 and there is future development planned for a more permanent solution for the London Olympics in 2012.

Project Solutions

Gooding Aluminium’s workshop fabricated the slip resistant alloy material into folded trays for use as flooring plates on the access ramp and lift floor. Aluminium is perfect for incorporating into weight sensitive applications, such as this one. Aluminium is only 1/3rd the weight of steel.
