Gooding Aluminium products can be found within a number of bars and restaurants across the UK.

Aluminium is a unique metal with a positive image that naturally appeals to the professional specifier and installer.

This incredibly versatile material, when combined with its alloys, can be folded, formed, machined or worked using a wide range of processes. Thanks to these excellent material properties, aluminium has become widely used within an extensive variety of architectural and related applications.

The many desirable design properties of aluminium alloy, including its lightweight to strength ratio, makes the material suitable for a varied selection of interior and external applications. To fully assist in the decision making processes it is clearly essential that valuable insight is gained into aluminium’s’ functionality and other performance criteria. Significant advances have also been made in recent years with processing technologies, thereby increasing expectations of improved products and surface finishes at lower cost.

The installation of aluminium products must be planned carefully to minimise risk of damage during the fixing process.  Contractors should be instructed to carry out spot checks on sheet products covered with protective film before working or fixing commences, to ensure surface finish suitability.

Follow the brief checklist below for a hassle-free installation:

Gooding AluminiumThe lightweight advantage of aluminium (34% that of steel) over other architectural materials, makes for ease of handling and fixing with a minimum number of operatives. When handling individual sheets or panels, care should be taken not to damage exposed edges or corners. Thin materials are particularly vulnerable.

Gooding AluminiumAluminium items have a best and reverse face. Inspect closely and ensure the best face is fixed / positioned on the most visible side.

Gooding AluminiumMaterial flanges which are oversize must not be forced or hammered into position. Components requiring a reduction in size should ideally be returned to the factory for re-processing.

Gooding AluminiumSite work such as drilling and cutting, should be avoided if at all possible. If specified, items can be supplied as accurately pre-cut and pre-drilled components subject to agreed tolerances

Gooding AluminiumWhen installing or working unprotected material surfaces, a low tack self adhesive tape or covering is to be applied to prevent surface marking.

Gooding AluminiumWhen site drilling is unavoidable, standard twist drills are satisfactory for most operations. For deep holes, high speed drills or bits with a steeper point of angle should be used.

Gooding AluminiumPositions for drill holes should not be marked out along visible faces with a scored line. A pencil, or felt tip pen with removable ink or similar is to be used, which can be subsequently wiped off with a soft cloth.

Gooding AluminiumCutting operations can be effected by semi high-speed and high-speed saws of between 150mm and 450mm diameter, with approximately 3 teeth per 25mm. Band saws and heavy duty woodworking machines are also suitable for light work. Blades used in hand saws should be of high speed type with fairly coarse teeth.

Gooding AluminiumAfter cutting, it is important that any swarf or chippings are removed from the product surface with extreme care, to avoid the possibility of scratching. These should be removed ideally with an air line or alternatively by lightly brushing away. Burrs can be removed by the use of long angle files with 14 to 20 single cut teeth per 25mm, for most fine work.

Gooding AluminiumRemove any grease, dirt deposits, finger marks, etc, from the material surface with non abrasive cleaning agents and materials, in accordance with the GA maintenance data sheet.

Being both lightweight and ductile, aluminium readily lends itself to fabrication.

However the un-initiated should tread carefully as there is no substitute for experience in specifying fabricated aluminium. It might, therefore, prove helpful if I share some key pointers with you, and these are;

ProductionTolerances: How long is a piece of string? There is no such thing in aluminium fabrication as an exact dimension. Every measurement is subject to a production tolerance. If sizing is critical, make sure you agree specifics with us before fabrication commences. If requested and to ensure a satisfactory ‘fit’, we can normally provide measurements that are ‘no greater than’ or ‘no less than’.

Aesthetics: To quote from Shakespeare ‘Beauty is bought by judgement of the eye’. Workshop processes will literally leave their mark on all metal surfaces. If aesthetics are important, and they often are, consider the intended location of the fabricated items. Lighting conditions, viewing distance and angle, etc., are among the elements that need to be taken into account.

Working from the premise that ‘prevention is better than cure’, sheet materials can be covered with a peelable protective film prior to production. This best practice precaution certainly assists in reducing, but not necessarily completely eliminating, surface marking.  Sheets are normally supplied with one good side (unless otherwise specified). It is also sometimes possible to ‘hide’ surfaces liable to workshop abrasions, as long as the visible faces are identified to us prior to fabrication.
