Aluminium Products – Mill Finish

All our aluminium materials and products are available in mill finish. After production into sheet or extrusion form, the aluminium surface is said to be mill finish. This untreated finish can besemi-bright in appearance and sometimes quite shiny. Rolling marks (on sheet), extrusion lines (on profiles) and other markings, including surface abrasions, are also commonly visible.

On perforated and patterned sheets these markings are normally much less noticeable.

For general applications, when the finished appearance is not of primary importance, then mill is often selected as the most economic choice.

More and more client specifications are calling for environmentally conscious material selection. The aluminium industry has appreciated for some time that today shapes tomorrow. Many advances in production technologies are being made that are helping to conserve resources, reduce emissions and eliminate disposal issues in the production of primary aluminium. Environmental issues are frequently complex and contested. We therefore only seek, in this part to provide a broad outline of the environmentally significant aspects that are at the heart of aluminium production. Information on life cycle performance and surface finishing technologies is also provided.

Sustainability

There is generally, particularly within the architectural industry, an increasing emphasis being placed on sustainability.

Nature has fortunately provided generous supplies of aluminium; it is the 3rd most common element and the most abundant metal. Only silicon and oxygen are more plentiful. Over 7% of the earth’s crust is made up of bauxite (from which aluminium is produced). Aluminium is considered harmless to animals and plants. It is reassuring to know that even based on current rising usage rates there are many hundred year’s worth of supplies remaining.

Clarification on Test Standards for Balustrade Infil Panels

There are a number of BS & BSEN Standards that apply to balustrades and at times this causes confusion and uncertainty for designers and specifiers alike!

BS 6399 (withdrawn March 2010) and superseded by BSEN 1991-1-1. BS 6399 Parapets, Balustrades and Partitions were covered and some design loads were given and this was extended to infil panels but for a designer to consider (by calculation usually).

BSEN 1991-1-1 reference is made to a National Annex for the actual design loads to be considered. This gives values for parapets and balustrades but not infil. There are requirements for partitions which have to provide a restraining function. Partitions are also required to resist vertical load but infill to balustrades are not included.

These contemporary alloy nosings (with hidden fixings) combine a super-grip ridged insert (3 colour options) with a classic linear look.

Elegant and hard wearing these ‘invisibly fixed’ stair treads are beautifully finished in anodised aluminium. You can select from 3 anodised insert finishes and these are; silver, Anolok blue/grey and Anolok black.

With these original and all aluminium contemporary stair nosings there is a selection of back edge options, these can be combined with hard and soft flooring surfaces of different thicknesses.
